It appears to me that a blog is just a simplified website. I can see posting reminders on here for parents and students about upcoming quizzes and tests. I struggle with discussion topics to post for my Math students. I hope to gain more insight in that as I continue.
You're right - a blog is a type of website. The difference is that a blog is meant to be updated and added to regularly (like you're doing). Many teachers use blogs to keep parents informed about what going on in class. For your students, you might be able to post a problem, and have them comment back about the method they used to solve it. You'll get more ideas as you see additional blogs.
